/ observations . . .

“To be a graphic designer in a country that is still so wide-open (we’re talking about NZ here) must be exciting. In the Netherlands, design culture is very dominant. We like it that way, we’re not complaining, but what we mean is this: as a design group, we know that our influence on Dutch design culture will be minimal ... As a young designer, you have the possibility to really change national design culture, to have a voice. Young designers, such as David Bennewith and the guys behind The National Grid, are really shaping the image of NZ design. There are scenes to create, standards to be set. Young NZ designers have a world to win. That’s something really special.” / From an interview with Experimental Jetset, by Joanna Alpe & Livia Lima, We Love, for Cheese on Toast /// more news >>

Christian Schwartz is principal of Schwartzco Inc., a New York-based type design and consultation firm. Schwartz has released commercial fonts with many respected foundries and designed proprietary typefaces for corporations and publications worldwide. Schwartz and British designer Paul Barnes began an ongoing collaboration in 2005 with their extensive typeface family for The Guardian’s dramatic new look. As part of the newspaper’s redesign team, the two were shortlisted for the Designer of the Year prize by the Design Museum in London and awarded a Black Pencil by D&AD.

Type outside the bubble

The most important breakthrough in typography in the last 20 years is probably the Font menu, which brought the idea of typographic choice to anyone who has ever sat down in front of a word processor. Never before have so many people been aware of the vast spectrum of typefaces, had a favorite typeface or even a favorite letter from a particular typeface, blogged about type, or been willing to sit through an entire documentary film about a typeface. In spite of this enthusiastic new cult following, type still has a reputation of being design for designers, and design for design’s sake. Type designer Christian Schwartz will discuss a wider view of type and culture at large, and will talk about the cross pollination between the two.
