Narrow Gauge to s/f: design tourism
LTC will explore the motivations for establishing design
studio Narrow Gauge and how it relates to split/fountain (s/f). Located
on K’Road Auckland in the vicinity of galleries and artist-run spaces,
s/f is a platform for Narrow Gauge and Michael Lett publishing
projects, design exhibitions and occasional events. s/f specialises in
artist and designer-driven publications and aims to encourage more
critical appraisal of design practice. Discussions will focus on the
long-term aspirations and objectives for the two ventures and some
international models for publishing and project spaces will be
considered.

A note on the titling
Courier Sans was designed by Practise and released commercially with Lineto in 2002. “Courier sans was originally designed in 1994 during the first year of my graphic design degree in order to circumvent the college’s tyrannical ‘courier only’ rule of their pseudo-basel ‘basic typography’ exercises. by taking the generic macintosh system font and cutting off all the serifs, a pleasantly anonymous and functional, yet somehow stylish sans serif was created. I received a third for the exercise, but was able to refute accusations of rule-breaking with the answer: “Ah, but you see: it’s courier SANS!”” Statement by James Goggin (Practise) www.lineto.com
