/ observations . . .

“To be a graphic designer in a country that is still so wide-open (we’re talking about NZ here) must be exciting. In the Netherlands, design culture is very dominant. We like it that way, we’re not complaining, but what we mean is this: as a design group, we know that our influence on Dutch design culture will be minimal ... As a young designer, you have the possibility to really change national design culture, to have a voice. Young designers, such as David Bennewith and the guys behind The National Grid, are really shaping the image of NZ design. There are scenes to create, standards to be set. Young NZ designers have a world to win. That’s something really special.” / From an interview with Experimental Jetset, by Joanna Alpe & Livia Lima, We Love, for Cheese on Toast /// more news >>

One minute of design

with Typeradio’s Donald Beekman and LoveLiza | NL

Two one-day workshops | 13 participants per workshop
Each workshop: NZ$145.00 | €72.50

Wednesday 11 February
1000-1800 | One minute of design | assignment: What does the alphabet sound like?

Thursday 12 February
1000-1800 | One minute of design | assignment: What does the alphabet sound like?

In recent years, more and more designers treat themselves not only as ‘2D-information-visualisers’, but also as writers, architects, philosophers, artists, photographers and so on. They take their design-knowledge/vision, and transfer it into other surroundings. Graphic designers tend to use other mediums to express their ideas. As long as one remembers their background, knowledge, and ‘not-knowledge’, the process can bring up interesting results. A little background: Typeradio is a channel on type and design. Typeradio is a paradox in terms. Type is printed and radio talks. Typeradio is naturally speech on type. It is a MicroFM broadcast, a MP3 radio stream and a podcast station. Initiated in 2004 by Underware (Akiem Helmling, Bas Jacobs and Sami Kortemaki), DBXL (Donald Beekman) and LoveLiza (Liza Enebeis). The team visits different design events around the world, to meet designers and to talk. The show is broadcasted live from these conferences. There are over 300 episodes which you can download for free including Peter Saville to Stefan Sagmeister, from Mathew Carter to Paula Scher. One programme on Typeradio which is broadcasted/podcasted is One minute of design, and Typeradio invites you to take part.

Create a 30 second to one minute typographic sound piece as a contribution for Typeradio. Select a letter to which you can illustrate it in sound. State the letter at the beginning of your recording.

Process Research the letter you have chosen - its origins, what it sounds like in different languages, in which words is it most commonly used, and its characteristics. Each of these elements can help you define what this letter sounds like.
Requirements Participants are to bring own laptop computer with a basic sound editing programme to record and edit sounds, and headphones.

Design a SHED11 font

with Bruno Maag | UK

Six two-hour workshops over two days | Six participants per workshop
Each workshop: NZ$55.00 | €27.50

Wednesday 11 February
1000-1200 | Workshop 1 – Provide ideas for a SHED11 font
1300-1500 | Workshop 2 – Establish design concept
1530-1730 | Workshop 3 – Create a full characterset

Thursday 12 February
1000-1200 | Workshop 4 – Create a full characterset
1300-1500 | Workshop 5 – Spacing of the font
1530-1730 | Workshop 6 – Kerning and making the font
1800-1845 | Presentation – open to all participants

Work with UK type designer, Bruno Maag, of Dalton Maag, to take part in the design and production of a bespoke SHED11 font. Maag’s hands-on workshop will give participants an insight into professional font production and the creation of a commercial product, from conceptualisation through design and engineering of a sample font, resulting in a font that will be produced via Fontlab and be made available to workshop participants. “Our ambition is to create caps, lowercase, numerals and punctuation – enough for great headlines etc. If time allows we’ll add more. Good quality type is never the result of an individual. This project highlights the importance of creative collaboration and communication.” The font is to be produced via Fontlab and be made available to participants.

Process
Workshop 1 – Provide ideas for a SHED11 font Participants will create different design ideas using a small characterset consisting of H O n o p h y e. We want as many different ideas as possible. This group will then choose a design to develop.

Workshop 2 – Establish design concept Using the initial design the group will refine the basic idea to establish clear design features that will make the font. The characterset is to be extended with the following characters (in addition to the above): T S a d g f i m s t u. The characters are to be spaced correctly to allow for dummy copy setting. Each participant will be given 3 or 4 characters to refine. It is expected that the drawings are of good quality. Bruno will assist the group in achieving these goals.

Workshops 3 and 4 – Create a full characterset These two sessions are concerned with creating the full characterset. Again the quality of drawing will be high. At the end of session 4 the entire characterset is completed.

Workshop 5 – Spacing of the font This group will proof the font designs so far and apply final and minor corrections. Once all drawing is completed the font will be spaced for the purpose it is intended. Note that no kerning is yet to be done.

Workshop 6 – Kerning and making the font The last session applies the necessary number of kern pairs to the font to allow for good typesetting. If time allows, the last group may also provide ideas for a documentation of the font creation process.

Presentation – open to all participants

Requirements Participants are to bring own laptop computer with Fontlab Studio 5 installed. Download a trial version from www.fontlab.com

Type design 101

with Ted Harrison | Fontlab | USA

A one-day workshop | 20 places | FULL

Workshop: NZ$145.00 | €72.50

Wednesday 11 February

1000-1800 | Type design 101

This is an all day crash course in the basics of type design. If you’ve dabbled in type, but always wanted to learn more then this course is for you. Ted Harrison of Fontlab will start out by talking about the structure and function of digital typefaces in order to get an understanding of how fonts really work. Then he’ll move on to the tools of typeface design, where you will begin creation of your own mini-font. After a break for lunch you’ll work on kerning and metrics and then wrap up the day by finishing your mini-font and talking about preflight preparations for generating fonts. All participants will get a free type design poster by Karen Cheng.

Photofonts on the web

with Ted Harrison | Fontlab | USA

Lunchtime lecture | FREE to all symposium and workshop registrants

Thursday 12 February

1200-1245 | Photofonts on the web

In the bad old days type on your web page looked like whatever font was available to the browser. Or if you used a bitmap your text lost searchability, indexability, and was invisible to the search engine spiders. No more. Using Flash and photofonts you can now make web pages that your viewers will see exactly the way you want them seen - with full color, transparency, grayscale, texture, and your choice of typeface - without sacrificing any of the qualities of hypertext. Ted Harrison of Fontlab will talk about how Flash and fonts work together and walk through the process of creating a photofont and then using sIFR (scalable Inman Flash Replacement) technology to place a headline on a web page.

NEXT/TIME: Type exploration of choices in a world context

with Karen Larsen | ALASKA

A half-day field-trip | 16 participants

Field-trip: NZ$95.00 | €47.50

Thursday 12 February

1000-1330 | NEXT/TIME : Type exploration of choices in a world context: an installation

NEXT/TIME will be constructed out of biodegradable material and released into the ocean. Words and forms have powerful meanings. Placed in different contexts they evoke different ideas. The words will call upon the viewer to think what it means and his/her role as a member of their community, this place, the world. Karen Larsen will construct this installation as part of a field trip to Matiu/Somes Island, and a discussion will follow.
